Grittleton Squeak Past Bogus Touring Side

Grittleton kept up their unbeaten start to the 2012 season with a 4 wicket win with 2 balls to spare over the Eric Matthews XI.

Following what seemed like weeks of endless rain during which ark building was trending on Twitter, Grittleton finally took to the field again. The match was billed as a match against a touring side. Turning up at the ground the expectation was that we would be facing a bleary-eyed hung over shambles of a cricket side instead it transpired that the Eric Matthews XI was in fact Mark Webb and extended family along with a few hangers on - not much difference really.

On a pitch more lifeless than Kenny Dalgleish's Liverpool prospects, Eric Matthews amassed a score of 143-6 in 35 overs. The traitor Mark Webb anchoring the innings with 70 not out. He was pleased with himself until some wag pointed out that this innings counted against his averages. Other notable contributions were R Webb (29) Shannahan (17) and Carrington (D.N.B).

Grittleton bowled accurately with Captain Binary returning figures of 7 overs 2-15 ably supported by Readman 7 overs 1-20 and Foard (M) 4 overs 1-12

Following a sumptuous tea during which Manchester City secured the Premiership title Grittleton went out to bat. A solid start was secured with Ward (15) and Kilfoil (29) putting on 31 for the first wicket. A mid innings mini collapse followed with both Binary and Readman failing to trouble the scorers, this also had the effect of putting Grittleton behind the run rate. However this situation was rescued mainly by a fine innings from Foard M (45 N.O.) who saw our heroes over the line.

A pint of fine ale in the Neeld Arms represented an excellent end to a satisfactory day.

Grittleton CC scored 144 for 7 wickets off 35 overs.

Eric Matthew s XI CC scored 143 for 4 wickets off 35 overs.

Tea provided by Graham Perkins.
